Xenophobia Attacks resume in Cape Town

October 08, 2008, 11:00

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has condemned xenophobic violence that occurred in the Eastern Cape this week."The barbaric incident that occurred in the vicinity of Queenstown and the recent torching of more than 20 shops in Jeffreys Bay, illustrate the dangers that xenophobia is posing to our province," said DA spokesperson Bobby Stevenson. "This unacceptable violence must not be tolerated in our province and urgent action needs to be taken to ensure that it is stamped out."About 200 people went on the rampage, looting shops owned by Somalis in Jeffreys Bay. The police fired warning shots at the looters who threw stones at them. One person was shot and admitted to hospital. - Sapa

  1. Once again the world is turning a blind eye on this disgusting act by human beings on other human beings. God must strike with lightning those who spend their entire days planning to harm defenceless people. It is shoking to learn that such barbarism is ochestrated by someone's son, daughter, mother, grany and etc. What goes around comes around. We wait for that day that it comes around.

Chairperson Jody Kollapen has described conditions at what's left of the Klerksoord Shelter in northern Pretoria as an unfolding humanitarian crisis.

The camp, which housed more than 800 immigrants displaced during xenophobic violence earlier this year, was dismantled earlier this week.

Kollapen visited the site on Wednesday.

The HRC chairperson says urgent intervention is needed at the shelter to avert a full-scale crisis.

Kollapen has appealed to both the Gauteng Provincial Government and the Tshwane Metro Council to assist the hundreds of immigrants still living on the site.

Tents at the shelter were dismantled on Monday and water supply disconnected.

On Tuesday the camp’s chemical toilets were removed.

Immigration officials were on the scene on Wednesday ready to arrest foreigners without proper documentation.

It’s understood the crackdown was called off because of Kollapen’s visit.
